How to Lock and Unlock your iPhone – Include Setting Auto-Lock

Touch screen phones sometimes happen to activate accidentally like when putting them in the pocket or taking them out of the pocket, etc. Thanks to lock function made available on gadgets which prevents activating the screen accidentally. Much like other gadgets, iPhone also features lock function.

You need to press the Sleep/Wake button placed at the top right side on the iPhone to lock it. One can use different options to unlock an iPhone. It can be as simple as sliding the screen or entering a 4 digit password for unlocking the screen.

Even after locking the iPhone, you can still use it in general ways like receiving calls and messages, listening to music and you can also pause the music and increase and decrease its volume. One single press on Sleep/Wake button will lock your iPhone or not using your iPhone for 1 minute will also lock your iPhone automatically.

Further, to unlock an iPhone you need to press either Sleep/Wake button or Home button (placed at the bottom center) of the screen and Slide Across the screen.

Apart from the above general features of Lock function in an iPhone, there is also an ‘Auto-Lock’ feature made available in an iPhone. The key benefit of ‘Auto-Lock’ feature is that it will turn off the light of your screen and lock your iPhone automatically when you are not using it for a long time which will further help in saving the your battery life. you can still continue listening to music even after the screen is locked. You can enable Auto-Lock feature by going to Settings > General > Auto-Lock. You need to set the duration during which screen must not be touched and it will lock automatically after the specified duration of time. However, you can still lock your iPhone manually, even if Auto-Lock feature is activated.

Further, to set a password to unlock the screen, follow the following steps:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Choose Passcode Lock.
  4. Enter and re-enter the desired 4-digit password/code.

You can also change this passcode, once it is set. To change the Passcode, select Passcode Lock option in General settings and enter your current code. Tap on change Passcode and enter your current passcode again and then enter and re-enter the new passcode. To turn-off the passcode lock option, tap on ‘Turn Passcode Off’ in Passcode Lock option on General Settings.

In case, you happen to forget your passcode or there is a risk that an unauthorized access to your iPhone made be made, you can activate Erase Data option in Passcode Lock. If one fails to enter the correct passcode for 10 consecutive times, all the information stored on your iPhone will be automatically deleted and it will get back to original settings. However, it can take up to 2 hours. Further, you can also restore the iPhone software in case you have forgotten your password.
